Portugal in April: nature, rocks and experiences for the whole family.

Updated: Dec 22, 2024

Portugal in April: nature, rocks and experiences for the whole family (less urban, more fun)!

If you're looking for an April trip that's different than what you thought, let me stop you for a moment: this isn't Austria, you won't find crowded challenge parks and crazy roller coasters here. In Portugal, nature is the real playground - rocks, beaches, caves, and endless views that will blow your mind!

A trip with children in Portugal

1. Lagos - beaches and rocks that will blow your mind (yes, really)

The beaches of Lagos is really not another standard visit to the beach. Imagine this: you are sitting on the beach, the children are playing, and in the background - spectacular rock formations in shades of gold and red rise out of the sea like sculptures of nature. The bay of Punta de Piedade, with its huge cliffs, offers you a scenic experience that will make you forget for a moment that you are here for the children at all!

If the kids are adventurous, take them on a boat tour through the caves hidden between the cliffs. Someone said "Cave of Wonders" and didn't get it?

2. Bengil Cave - a magical dream under the rocks

Bengil Cave, located in southern Portugal, has one of the most spectacular views in Europe. This is not just a beach with cliffs - it is a huge cave open to the sky that is lit by the sunlight coming through the huge hole above. Children will feel as if they have entered a mysterious world, and you? Well, you just take pictures and take pictures. You can reach it by boat or swim, if you are in a sporty mood.

3. Fenish beaches - both for surfing and wading

Panish, a cool little beach town, is the place for surfing enthusiasts. Even if the kids don't really know the difference between a surfboard and a kayak, you'll find an amazing beach with waves that will provide a few hours of wet fun. And after the kids have finished wading, you can admire the scenery - rocks, sandy beaches and endless silence. Or as they say in Penish - here you will find high waves, and even if you don't surf, at least you will see a professional pose!

4. Berlinga - robber islands, dolphins, and everything in between

The Berling Islands (Islas Berlengas) are a kind of "Caribbean Islands" of Portugal, only with less pirates and more dolphins. A short sail from mainland Portugal will bring you to a place where the sea is calm and the sand is white, and an ancient fortress sits in the middle of all this wild nature. The children will be able to explore the fort and imagine they are pirates, while you enjoy the peace and the view. Just remember to bring plenty of water, because after a few hours of treasure hunting, they'll be as thirsty as after running a marathon.

5. Nazara - extreme beaches and children of fun

Nazaré may be Portugal's extreme surfing destination, but even ordinary families like you will find something to do here. True, the waves here are some of the biggest in the world, but luckily for you - there are also calmer areas where the kids can build sandcastles while you photograph these crazy surfers. Who said "Instagram" and didn't get it?

If you're into a little more adrenaline (in a parental dose, yes?), go up to the observation point above the beach. The view from the cliff simply leaves you speechless - and all that remains is to try to explain to the children why you can't jump off this cliff into the sea. (for now).

6. Slate cities in central Portugal - a little rural, a lot rainy, totally worth it!

When winter ends and spring begins to take over, central Portugal becomes one of the most interesting places to travel. True, it may be rainy, but walking in the rain is part of the experience - especially when the magical villages of the slate towns (Aldeias do Xisto) give you the feeling that time has stood still. The children will be able to explore the narrow alleys and the houses that look like they were built out of the mountains themselves. And here's a little secret - after rain, the air here is so fresh that your lungs will thank you. No need to bring special umbrellas, rain is just water!

7. Praia de Santa Cruz beach - the amazing rock beach

If you are in the area of the town of Torres and Dres,

Santa Cruz Beach also offers clear water and wide beaches, perfect for a day of sun and playing on the sand. Even if a little rainy, the beach is still worth a visit thanks to the dramatic atmosphere of the sea and the rocks that rise above the water. If you are fond of beach trips, this is exactly the place to wander with the children and discover hidden corners, small caves and waves crashing on the cliffs.

8. Castles in Mervao and Elves - history and landscape

When talking about stunning castles, Marvão and Elvas are your answer. Marvao sits on a high hill, and when you reach it, you will understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. The ancient castle offers a panoramic view that will take you straight to the age of knights and princesses.

In Alves, on the other hand, an impressive fortress system that has been declared a world heritage site awaits you. This is exactly where the kids can imagine they're defending the fort from invaders (or just running around, because there's plenty of room!).

9. Panda-Gresh Park - wild nature for the whole family

Peneda-Gerês National Park is a natural paradise for Portugal. Here you will find gushing waterfalls, magnificent forests and blue lakes. The varied routes are also suitable for families with children, and they pass through traditional villages and landscapes that will make you stop every few minutes for a photo. And if you're lucky, you might come across moose or wild horses!

Summary of Portugal in April:

Portugal in April is the perfect destination for families who want to enjoy money, sea and rock formations that even imagination would not have thought of. Whether you're a lover of calm beaches or mesmerizing views, each destination has something to offer - and most importantly, you return home with loads of photos, memories (and a light tan).

The most important message?

Don't forget that the trip is for everyone - whether it's sitting quietly on the beach, walking between cliffs, or running after the kids who can't decide which side of the beach is more interesting. In short, have fun and make life!
